Meet PERIN - SYA Spain 2026
Extracurriculars Abroad: Lacrosse! I met Spanish natives who I am still in touch with, and I was able to travel with the team for tournaments around the country. Lacrosse practice was one of my favorite parts of the week!
Favorite SYA Class: Art History with Sole! I loved seeing the elements we learned about in class on our academic travel trip to Andalucia, where we were able to explore cathedrals and historic landmarks.
Favorite Food in Spain: Classic tortilla Española! This was the first meal that my host family took me out to, and I loved getting it during descanso in the morning with my friends!
How did SYA impact your college search process?
As I’ve begun the college search process, I’ve realized how my time in Spain has changed the way I see myself and my learning. I know now that I definitely want to study abroad in college because of my semester experience. SYA showed me just how rewarding travel and learning other cultures can be, and I know I want to integrate that into my education. My time abroad also allowed me to consider majoring in international relations, because it was my first authentic experience with a new country.
Do you have a favorite memory with your host family?
On my birthday, which was only about a month after my arrival, I was homesick and nervous to be away from my family for the day. When I woke up and started to get ready for school, my host mom greeted me with balloons, a special breakfast, and a lot of excitement for the special occasion. I immediately felt at ease, and her attention to my personal life was extremely touching and special. That night, my host mom and sister brought me out to a birthday dinner where they gave me a beautifully written card and a thoughtful gift. After only a month of living with them, they were able to make my birthday an extremely memorable and special day.
What did you learn abroad that surprised you?
I was really surprised by the culture around family life! My host grandmother came over for lunch every Sunday, my host sister lived at home even while studying at university, and I was able to be a part of a few gatherings with my entire extended host family. The connections that they had were so special, and their pride for Zaragoza and each other was amazing to see and learn.
