COVID-19 Information and Updates

At School Year Abroad, student health and safety is our top concern. During the 2019-2020 academic year, our programs underwent major shifts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We began evacuating and closing our campuses at the end of January 2020 and by mid-March all of our students had returned to their families (mostly in the United States) and transitioned to online learning. A timeline of SYA's responses to the COVID-19 pandemic appears below, including select communications to parents, guardians, students and the greater SYA community.

At this time, it remains impossible to predict the events that may transpire several months from now. For parents of students who will join the 2021 spring cohorts at SYA, as well as parents of prospective students, we can provide the following information and assurances:

  • The health and safety of our students is our top concern and any decisions made about programming next year are made with this firmly in mind.
  • The countries in which our campuses operate are all different and are likely to have some differences in their educational planning for next year.
  • SYA will make informed decisions on student health and safety respectful of and adhering to local circumstances and regulations.

We will stay in contact with families during the fall with important local information and specific campus plans regarding social distancing measures, transportation, hygiene and campus opening plans, respectful of local regulations. President Tom Hassan and his Resident Directors are monitoring updates, best practices and local recommendations closely at each SYA campus. If you have health and safety-related questions about your child’s participation in SYA next year, please contact School Operations Administrator Sam Gammons CN'01.
