A culture of protest in France? Analysis of methods of protesting.
This class aims to better understand the notion of social protest through the act of demonstrating in France, and to question the existence, or otherwise, of a protest culture in France. The analysis of ways of protesting, its strong historical roots, the weight of context and temporality, and the importance of media coverage with the exogenous views will be some of our points of reference. Over and above the political, economic and social factors that lead to crisis situations, we will be looking at how demonstrations create a space for the expression of demands and a necessary outlet in the face of growing mistrust of the spheres of power.
Conversational skills in French are recommended for this class.
