In Search of a National Architecture
2023 has been chosen as the Year of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the most well known Spanish Art Nouveau architects. As an intellectual, 145 years ago, he published an article entitled ‘In search of a national architecture’ offering his perspective on the topic. In fact, national identity and architecture have been related for centuries offering productive discussions and leaving a gorgeous architectural heritage. What defines a ‘national architecture’? How are its main features determined? How has each country faced the issue? In trying to answer these questions, I would like to present a global panorama of the issue, sharing some of the most relevant theories and showing several remarkable exemples, especially in Spain and Latin America.
