In Search of a National Architecture
2023 has been chosen as the Year of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the most well known Spanish Art Nouveau architects. As an intellectual, 145 years ago, he published an article titled "In search of a national architecture," offering his perspective on the topic. National identity and architecture have been related for centuries, but what defines national architecture? How are its main features determined? How has each country faced the issue? In this class, Álvaro presents a global panorama of the topic, sharing some of the most relevant theories and showing several remarkable examples, especially in Spain and Latin America.
