Why should you give to SYA?

The SYA Fund is the foundation of philanthropic support for our students and faculty, bringing our community together to sustain the educational experience that defines SYA. Like almost all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a semester or year abroad. Annual giving helps bridge that gap, providing support for travel experiences, extracurriculars, host families, faculty, financial aid, campus maintenance and so much more.

Your participation matters!

The collective participation of alumni, parents, faculty and friends strengthens the SYA experience and ensures that our students are well prepared as global citizens.

We know that each member of our community has different means. In any given year, gifts to the SYA Fund have ranged from $1 to $60,000. All gifts make a difference across our campuses.

Ready to add your support?

There are many ways to support SYA!

Make your gift online, mail a check, recommend a grant through your donor-advised fund or explore another giving option that works for you.

I support SYA because it continues to influence the decisions I make daily, both personal and professional. It is important to me that SYA continues for generations of students to come, and I hope that in supporting SYA I am supporting this mission as well as contributing to making SYA more accessible for students everywhere.Heather Mewkill FR'15

Your Impact

Your generosity shows up in countless ways across SYA — from the financial aid that makes a year abroad possible to the school trips, classroom resources and everyday experiences that bring it to life. These stories offer a glimpse of your dollars in action and the opportunities they create for our students and faculty.

  • Host Families

On a September afternoon in Viterbo, the air is charged with anticipation. Names are called, one by one. A student steps forward, and so does a family. Strangers only seconds earlier, they meet in the middle with a hug, a kiss on both cheeks — the bacetto they had practiced minutes before — and their first photograph together.

Sharing Ideas, Shaping the Future
  • Faculty

Faculty and staff from headquarters, SYA France, Italy and Spain gathered under the frescoes of the salone in Viterbo, Italy for the third Conference on Teaching and Learning Abroad, offering a chance for colleagues to step away from the rhythms of daily school life, reflect on their practice and strengthen the professional and personal connections that make SYA such a vibrant educational community.

Words related to philanthropy
  • SYA Fund

Greek playwright Aeschylus coined the term “philanthropy,” meaning “love of humanity,” in the 5th century BCE. Today, philanthropy means generosity in all its forms and is often defined as giving gifts of time, talent and treasure to help make life better for other people. Together, we amplify our impact on causes that are meaningful and fuel our passion.

  • Educational Travel

School trips are an essential ingredient of the SYA experience that the SYA Fund helps make possible each year. Traveling with teachers and classmates to another city or region brings history and culture to life for our students. It exposes them to the many marvels that exist in their backyard abroad.

Gathering at the Table
  • Host Families

In cultures around the world, the act of gathering around a table to share a meal is deeply ingrained and cherished. It's not just about satisfying hunger; it's a ritual that binds families, friends and communities together. And at SYA, the simple act of sharing a meal transcends mere sustenance; it plays a fundamental role in deeper cultural immersion and learning opportunities for our students.
