The Halsey Fund

The Halsey Fund, a permanent endowment for scholarships, is named in honor of Woodruff W. Halsey II — former president, executive director, resident director and teacher. Established in 2011, the Halsey Fund enables one student per year to receive generous financial aid as well as a stipend for round-trip airfare to the SYA school of enrollment.

The endowment was made possible through the generosity of the Bulgari Family, who donated $1.5 million to SYA: $1 million to the Halsey Fund, and $500,000 to provide funding for the now-completed SYA Spain campus.  Since the initial gift, other donors, including loyal alumni, parents and friends have also contributed to this fund and continue to do so each year.

The Halsey Fund scholarship addresses merit and demonstrated financial need by covering tuition for a student who is both academically gifted and could not attend SYA without financial assistance. In addition to tuition, the Halsey Fund provides a stipend for the recipient to cover the cost of round-trip airfare to the SYA school of enrollment.

My year abroad taught me the value in taking risks – the reward is more valuable than I could ever describe, because this experience is truly unique and unforgettable.

This newfound confidence will stick with me for the rest of my life and will open doors for me in more ways than one, and I can only thank my experience at SYA for that.

Though I am sure that I will continue growing and progressing, I will take the strength and grace that this year has given me and carry it through the rest of my life.

I always aimed to make the most of the short time I spent in Zaragoza. Now, I feel that I have departed with a completely new outlook, new wisdom and a sense of independence.

There has not been one moment that I have regretted my year in China. Some of my favorite experiences were just simple things such as taking the bus or conversations with strangers.

My year was filled with ridiculously fun experiences and utter kindness from locals. However cliché it may sound, I'm constantly thinking about how SYA is truly a dream come true.
