Rick Smolan Does it Again
Reprinted from 1987 SYA Newsletter
Rick Smolan ES’67 who learned to make prints in a Barcelona photographer's shop after classes with Señor Vilalta, and whose first photo essay was the SYA Spain 1967 yearbook, has brought his career full circle with publication of Un Día en la Vida de España in Spain this month. The work in Spain gave Rick a chance to see his host family again (he’s been back to Barcelona five times since graduation) ... and to meet His Majesty, King Juan Carlos (in photo) who became a firm supporter of the project chronicling a day in his country.
Since last we brought you up to date on Rick’s work, his A Day in the Life of America (the first photographic book ever to make The New York Times Bestseller List) has sold one million copies; and A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union has also become a best seller, having been featured on the cover of Time magazine. The English version of Un Día en la Vida de España will be released in April 1988.
