Tony Berg FR'71 Named the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Shaping the Soundtrack of Generations 

When Tony Berg FR’71 arrived in France with SYA in 1970, he couldn't have known the experience would help shape a career that would influence generations of musicians. Tony has often credited his year abroad with broadening his perspective and helping ignite a creative spark that launched his career in music. 

Over the past five decades, Tony has become one of the most respected producers, musicians, and music executives in the business. Beginning his career as a session guitarist, he went on—as a player, writer, arranger, producer, composer, and executive — to help define the sound of artists including Bob Dylan, Beck, Phoebe Bridgers, Aimee Mann, Sombr, Andrew Bird, Nickel Creek, and many others. As executive music producer for the acclaimed television series Daisy Jones & the Six, he brought an authentic 1970s rock sound to a new generation of listeners. 

Tony's work continues to earn industry recognition. In 2024, he received a Grammy Award for The Record by boygenius, along with additional Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Engineered Album. While his technical expertise and artistic vision have made him one of music's most sought-after collaborators, colleagues also praise his generosity as a mentor, helping emerging artists find and develop their own creative voices. 

Tony's career reflects the curiosity, adaptability, and global outlook fostered through an SYA education. His ability to bridge cultures, genres, and generations has left an enduring mark on the music industry while inspiring countless artists to pursue their own creative journeys. Today, his influence can be heard not only in award-winning recordings, but in the musicians whose careers he has helped launch and shape. 

Beyond the Bio Q&A with Tony

One lesson from SYA that you still carry with you?
"The independence offered by the year abroad — coupled with the extraordinary scholastic and social opportunities provided by SYA — laid the groundwork for a profoundly inspiring experience.  I was lucky enough to glean from that experience that one must never be a passenger in his own life; take the reins. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Most of all, PAY ATTENTION! You never know whom you might meet or what you might learn. My year in Rennes was the formative year of my life precisely because I was receptive to new things."

What’s one quality every great artist shares?
"Real artists are compelled to express themselves and, in the process, to stimulate thought. History tells us that that expression — that art — is what truly endures." 

Best advice for a young creative? 
"Prepare yourself for heartbreaks…of all kinds. It is a life that brings no guarantees; no safety nets, no security, etc. But, if you have the determination—if you can’t not do it—there is nothing more rewarding."

If your SYA year had a soundtrack, what song would be on it? 
"Though the song precedes my time abroad by a few years, Strawberry Fields Forever strikes me as the seminal song for my generation; and for generations thereafter. Why? Because it demonstrates how far and with what fearlessness a writer can lead his or her listeners."
