COVID-19 Preparedness and Planning

Update as of December 18, 2020:

In recent news, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has endorsed the use of two vaccines for COVID-19 prevention. Thanks to this exciting development, we are hopeful that we will be able to resume operations at all campuses for our 2021 Summer program and the 2021-2022 academic year. SYA will update its protocols, given the latest directions from local and country authorities, closer to the reopening of our campuses. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the situation both at home and abroad.

Update as of November 2, 2020:

After careful deliberation, we have made the difficult decision not to run our Spring Semester 2021 programs at all three of our campuses. This decision was based on a number of factors — including government restrictions implemented in response to the latest coronavirus data — that would make operating in these countries exceedingly challenging and significantly compromise our ability to offer an immersive and experiential program. We hope to resume operations at all campuses for our 2021 Summer program and the 2021-22 academic year.

At School Year Abroad, we hold the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff and community as the highest priority. Although uncertainty remains in the international health community as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, public health measures taken throughout the world have become normalized and people have grown accustomed to changes in how we interact with each other.

At SYA, a committee including each country’s Resident Director and home office leadership has been closely monitoring international responses to COVID-19 and their impact on our programs. On October 15, SYA's Board of Trustees voted to move forward with our plans to offer the 2021 Spring Semester programs in France, Italy and Spain.

If you are a student, we invite you to come on a new journey with us; one that will look and feel different from previous years (or from your own expectations), but will nevertheless give you an unparalleled opportunity to explore a new country and culture at an unprecedented time. Although it will be a different kind of semester in some ways, we are confident that this will be an unforgettable experience for you.

We hope you will find the following information detailing SYA’s COVID-19 preparation informative and reassuring. Please carefully read the information that follows and click on the appropriate tab for country-specific information on how we will reopen the campus your child will attend. Each campus has also compiled a list of additional external COVID-19 Resources.

Please bear in mind that certain events remain outside SYA’s control. Should global circumstances shift dramatically during the coming months, SYA reserves the right to suspend the Spring 2021 program.
