May 16 Launch!

The United Nations headquarters in New York City will provide a grand backdrop for the launch of SYA’s first-ever comprehensive capital campaign, The Campaign for SYA, on Thursday, May 16. “We’re excited to unveil the details of this historic campaign in a setting that is truly symbolic of SYA’s mission to provide a global experience to our students,” said SYA President Tom Hassan.

“SYA has been the gold standard in study abroad education for more than 50 years, and reaching the goals of this campaign will ensure it continues to be so,” said Trustee and Campaign Co-Chair Alex Alger FR'79 CN'12P, who will be reuniting that evening with a group of her Rennes classmates. “We were all transformed by our year abroad, and I can't wait for my classmates to hear about SYA’s plans for the future!”

Trustee and Campaign Co-Chair James Broderick FR’71 agrees, sharing that “SYA is a unique institution in American high school education, and there are now about 8,000 SYA alumni. While not everyone will be able to join us at the UN, I’m confident this event and the participants will evoke that extraordinary community we have built over several decades. This campaign presents an opportunity for all of us to come together and ensure that SYA continues its leadership in providing the ultimate international experience for high school students in the US.”

Event participants will be treated to a number of special insights and opportunities, and we look forward to providing more detail about the evening’s program as we get closer to the date. Just confirmed, we are pleased to offer our SYA event attendees a special opportunity for a private, docent-led tour of the UN prior to the event that evening.

Springing Into Capstones

No single class or activity captures the SYA experience quite like the capstone project. Not only does it provide students an opportunity to put their evolving skills to the test, it also gives them a chance to dive into a single topic that captures their imagination and interest.

Raised by a consummate francophone, Sam Bloom FR’83 was destined to pursue French. His first year at the Taft School (CT) nurtured his intellectual curiosity in French language and culture, and when presented with an opportunity to attend SYA France as a junior, Sam was all in.

Will Travel for Wine

Six years ago, a friend invited Wanda Mann ES’89 to lunch with a prominent winemaker from Argentina. “It was the first time that I sat across the table from a winemaker and learned about their process and passion,” she said.
