Resident Director John McLoughlin gathers the Class of SYA China 2020 while visiting temples in Chengde. Here, John describes how much of the temple architecture in Chengde was built by the Qing dynasty Emperor Qianlong in the second half of the 1700s. Originally twelve temples were built in the long narrow valley in which Chengde sits. The valley provided a retreat for emperors to escape Beijing’s summer heat and to engage in martial activities that connected them to their semi-nomadic, horseback past. Beyond their religious function, the temples were built to awe visiting emissaries, particularly Tibetan and Mongolian groups.

This has become a tradition and a way to discover one of the marvels of the world in the same way that thousands of pilgrims have been doing it for ages. This year was particularly special because of the high tides and the dramatic weather.
