My first month in Beijing has been filled with new and exciting adventures. First big change for me would be living in a large city. I am from the capital of Virginia which is a small city, and in no way compares to Beijing. Discovering the inner city-dweller inside of me has been fun. I have found I can find my way around and navigate public transportation quite nicely. One amazing (and sometimes frightening) thing about being in Beijing is that almost everything is a new experience. From being yelled at in Chinese by a bus lady to discovering really good American restaurants around town; everything is new and exciting. One thing I thought would be a struggle prior to coming to Beijing would be finding American foods. One of my favorite things to do in Beijing is going out to eat with friends and shopping. I like to go to real stores as well as the silk market. Bargaining is fun especially at the silk market where they have everything you could ever want and more. I also enjoy hunting for Beijing's best pizzas because who doesn't love pizza?!
SYA creates such a unique environment for its students. Here, you are surrounded by all these people with an array of backgrounds and interests yet all of them share a passion for travel and language learning. Being surrounded by people who are passionate about learning Chinese is a wonderful experience that many students could not experience at their home schools. Overall, I'm so happy I made the decision to do SYA. I can't wait to spend the rest of my year in this crazy but wonderful city!
