Program Overview
SYA Summer invites you to participate in our intensive language and cultural immersion program in Beijing, China. Modeled after the highly successful School Year Abroad year-long program, welcoming students to China since 1994, SYA Summer in China is designed for students who have been studying Mandarin for at least one year and can challenge even the most advanced students.
This is a five-week program consisting of a four-week, intensive language and cultural experience followed by one week of guided travel. Students will live with carefully chosen host families and take language classes appropriate for their level with SYA Chinese language specialists at our school, which has been located in Beijing Normal High School #2 since its founding.
While mornings are dedicated to language instruction, the afternoons open up a world of opportunities, including field trips in and around the city, calligraphy and martial arts classes and other activities designed to introduce students to the wonderful people and culture of China. Weekends are equally stimulating with one day spent on local excursions and one day designated as free time.
At SYA Summer, time spent outside of the classroom is one of the most important teaching tools available to us. Guided field trips to places like the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, as well as other equally important, but lesser-known destinations are all part of the SYA Summer experience. The final seven days of the program are spent traveling to destinations such as Xi'an, Lijiang and Shaxi.
