SCHOLARSHIPS

The Merit Scholarship program recognizes high school students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability, commitment to their home school communities and passion for exploring other cultures.

The Halsey Fund Scholarship provides academically exceptional and globally-minded high school students the opportunity to experience a rich academic and cultural education at SYA, and in doing so, prepare them to become leading citizens of the world.

Merit Scholarship Program

School Year Abroad offers sixteen Merit Scholarships to assist families with providing their children an outstanding high school study abroad experience. The Merit Scholarship program recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability, commitment to their school communities and passion for exploring other cultures. Applicants for the Merit Scholarship are considered without regard for financial need. Expenses for travel, books, incidentals and pocket money are not covered by the scholarship grants.

Eligibility: Any high school student applying to School Year Abroad for the 2017-2018 academic year is eligible to apply for a Merit Scholarship.

Grants: Four winners per SYA country receive a grant of $20,000 each toward the cost of tuition. Applicants for the Merit Scholarship are also encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid and may receive both forms of assistance.

How to apply:

1. Complete an online application for admission to SYA, including a personal interview by February 1, 2017. (If you are a student at a Member School, please see your coordinator before beginning an application.)

2. Respond to the following question in 500 words or fewer: Imagine you have just compiled your 300-page autobiography; please select any page and share it with us.

3. Email your essay as an attachment to sya.admissions@sya.org no later than February 1, 2017. Please be sure to include your name and the SYA country to which you are applying on your attachment.

SYA must receive your complete SYA application (including transcript, interview and teacher recommendations) and all supplemental merit scholarship application requirements by February 1, 2017 in order to be considered for a merit scholarship.

If you plan to apply for need-based financial aid concurrently, be sure to submit your completed financial aid application by February 15, 2017.

Halsey Fund Scholarship

School Year Abroad offers the Halsey Fund Scholarship each year to a high school student who demonstrates exceptional academic ability, financial need, and a substantial interest in global study, understanding cultural differences and developing language proficiency.

Eligibility: Any high school student applying to School Year Abroad for the 2017-2018 academic year who exhibits exceptional academic ability, demonstrates a passion for international studies, and qualifies for financial aid.

Award: The Halsey Fund scholarship recipient is awarded full tuition. In addition SYA will provide a stipend for round trip airfare to the SYA school of enrollment.

Responsibilities of a Halsey Scholar:

  • The Halsey Scholar will remain in good academic standing throughout the SYA academic year.
  • The Halsey Scholar will be an ambassador for the school, and represent the transformative power of an SYA education.

  • How to Apply:

    1. Complete an online application for admission to SYA, including a personal interview by February 1, 2017. (If you are a student at a member school, please see your coordinator before beginning an application.)

    2. Write a separate essay answering: “Tell us something you have accomplished - at school, at home, or in your community - that has prepared you to make the most of your experience attending School Year Abroad.” The essay should be no more than 500 words and emailed as an attachment to SYA Admissions at sya.admissions@sya.org by February 1, 2017. Please make sure to include your name and the SYA country to which you are applying on your attachment.

    3. Complete the financial aid application by February 15, 2017.

    SYA must receive your complete SYA application (including transcript, interview and teacher recommendations) and Halsey Fund essay by February 1, 2017 in order to be considered for the Halsey Fund Scholarship. Your financial aid application must be received by February 15, 2017.

    Selection Process:

    Three finalists will be selected and interviewed by a panel of SYA administrators and faculty.
